About Us

Dr. Sue Barnett is a native of central Maine, and grew up hiking and wandering the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire.  After graduating from Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009, she pursued additional training that took her across the US. Returning to New England in 2013, she was reminded that 'home is where the heart is', and has spent the last several years living, working, and adventuring in Maine and New Hampshire. She now resides in Twin Mountain, New Hampshire with her partner, cats (Westie, Lu, and Havoc), gecko (Gator), and a dog (Sable) to watch over a flock of chickens and turkeys (who all have names but we won't list all 30 here).

Dr. Barnett started thinking about a service that would provide in-home end-of-life care for animals in northern New Hampshire during the height of the pandemic. Similar services have become available across the US, but are often limited to large population centers. Many local veterinarians in less populated regions have not been able to provide the in-home services they used to offer due to time and staffing constraints.

Her background as a traveling large animal veterinarian and her respect for the human-animal bond led her to develop Northern Winds Veterinary Services, a mobile practice which focuses solely on the last veterinary visit. For many animals and owners, the trip to the clinic is a stressful one, or mobility limitations mean just getting them in and out of the car is a significant challenge. In the home environment, the physical and emotional stress around euthanasia is often significantly reduced.

At the end of a beloved companion's life, the 'right thing to do' is different for everyone. Northern Winds Veterinary Service hopes to be a resource for those who would like the opportunity to say goodbye in the comfort of home.

Services are currently limited to New Hampshire and Maine residences only. We hope to be able to add Vermont visits at some point in the future.
